New music theatre degree announced for Sydney TAFE

BA. of Arts (Music Theatre)
Monday, 14 July 2014 to Sunday, 30 November 2014

Federation University (Ballarat Arts Academy) in partnership with Sydney TAFE is delighted to be offering, for the first time in Sydney, the highly acclaimed degree in Music Theatre. Small, intensive and practice-based, this degree is now recognised as one of the most creative and productive professional training programs in Australian Performing Arts, rivalling that of VCA and WAAPA.

The dynamic game changer will be led by David Wynen and Federation University (Ballarat Arts Academy – previously known as BAPA) in partnership with Sydney TAFE. The course has been announced to be positioned in Ultimo and Chippendale with in close proximity to the ABC studios, where many major productions rehearse in Sydney and theatres like the Capitol and Lyric.

According to David Wynen, this university degree will be the first of its kind in Sydney. With HECS places available and stringent quality control, this university course will build on the structure of existing music theatre degree available in Ballarat.

“I have always been excited by theatre in Sydney”, Wynen said.

“It will be wonderful for talented artists to stay in their hometown rather than travel for quality Music Theatre training. I hope to make this a national hub for Music Theatre.”

Although WAAPA has long been considered the most comprehensive university Music Theatre training ground in the country, with rental prices skyrocketing in Perth and the cost of living away from home while studying increasing steadily, this course could be just what the doctor ordered for Sydney music theatre hopefuls. The Australian Institute of Music or AIM (a private educator) and NIDA also do offer music theatre courses, but no University in Sydney has yet offered this particular kind of training in music theatre.

The program is slated to commence in February next year, with auditions for the first intake taking place in October 2014.

The Ballarat Arts Academy course has produced many graduates working in major musicals across the country and internationally. Graduates have worked on Strictly Ballroom, Cirque De Soleil, King Kong, Mama Mia, Cats, Les Miserables, Hairspray, Jersey Boys, Mary Poppins, and Wicked to name a few. High Profile graduates of the course include Cristina D’Agostino, Josh Piterman, Jaz Flowers, James Smith, Jared Newall and Graeme Foote.

Shelagh Stanton impresses with her skills
Thursday, 24 July 2014 to Friday, 31 October 2014

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has awarded its 2014 NSW ABC Women in Broadcast Technology Scholarship to Sydney TAFE student Shelagh Stanton.

The Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering student impressed the broadcaster's technology division with her experience, especially her work in community radio and at FBI radio, and her studies.

She was awarded a four-week paid work placement with the ABC and a $1000 book allowance.

‘The ABC Women in Broadcast Technology scholarships provide the opportunity for women to gain a broad range of technical knowledge and experience in the broadcast industry while working in a unique facility such as the ABC’, said  the ABC's Manager of Technical Services New South Wales, Alex Burger.

The technical support of broadcast systems and equipment has been a traditionally male dominated occupation and the scholarship, which has been awarded to up to eight women a year since 1992, has played a significant role in helping reduce this gender gap, he added.

Shelagh is one of only two women studying the diploma course at Sydney TAFE this year. She has almost finished the ABC work placement and, the broadcaster said, is well placed to gain a full-time job after she completes her studies.

Head Teachers of Electronics at Sydney TAFE John Zervos and Michael Wilks were at the ABC to congratulate Shelagh on her award (pictured).

Chefs, cooks and hairdressers could gain Australian qualifications
Friday, 1 August 2014 to Thursday, 25 December 2014

Skilled people from China, South Korea and the United Kingdom will have the chance to gain a qualification from Sydney TAFE following an agreement signed with the Commonwealth Department of Industry’s Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).

Sydney TAFE, as a TRA-approved registered training organisation, will assess the skills, knowledge and experience of chefs, cooks and hairdressers and award an Australian qualification to successful applicants as part of their 457 or Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) application.

The service provided by Sydney TAFE assesses candidates through recognition of prior learning, work experience and a technical interview. The assessment is part of the visa requirement for people seeking temporary or permanent migration to Australia. It determines whether a person has the skills and experience necessary to start work immediately in Australia in their chosen occupation.

Heather Roberts, Director, National and International Relations at Sydney TAFE said TRA’s approval of the Institute for this important role is further recognition of Sydney TAFE’s strong position as a vocational skills provider, both locally and internationally.

“Sydney TAFE is thrilled to have been chosen by Trade Recognition Australia to conduct skills assessment services,” Ms Roberts said. “We have a long history of providing qualifications in commercial cookery and hairdressing which prepare graduates for a successful career in these fields.”

This service compliments the work Sydney TAFE already does through the Job Ready Program (JRP) as a TRA-approved registered training organisation providing workplace skill assessments.  Sydney TAFE is also a ‘one stop shop’ for employer contributions to the 457 and 185 Visa training programs.
