DIA interwoven stand at designex 2014
Emma Parson named interior design graduate of year
Friday, 30 May 2014 to Monday, 30 June 2014

Emma Parson has been named the Australian Graduate of the Year for Interior design and decoration, in the Design Institute of Australia’s (DIA)  Australian Graduate Of The Year Award (AGOTYA) program .

Emma, who graduated from Sydney TAFE Design Centre Enmore in 2013, picked up first place in the NSW GOTYA awards earlier in the year and her work was then judged against design graduates from around Australia and NZ.

The awards were announced at DesignEx, Australia's leading interiors, design ideas and architecture event at Glebe Island Sydney where a team of DCE interior design students also helped set up the Design Institute of Australia’s INTERWOVEN exhibition stand.

Over two days the students, as part of their materials technology class, worked  with the DIA’s textile practice group and the INTERWOVEN curatorial team to create the canopy for the exhibition stand and complete placement of the works and materials for the exhibition.

It was a great opportunity for the students to develop some hands-on experience with exhibition design and curatorial practice, build their resume, learn about planning and managing events and make new contacts in the  local design industry.

They also attended the VIP industry opening of the exhibition which was curated by Gitte McGloin, a Design Centre Enmore Alumnus.

Travel and Tourism

Sydney TAFE Travel and Tourism, in conjunction with IATG, is pleased to offer a Master Chat session, with Matt Crouch, to allow you to update your knowledge on this important part of your business operations.

Taking commissions can in some circumstances land you in legal trouble – even in jail. Do you receive part (or all) of your income in the form of commissions? Confusion abounds throughout the tourism industry about the legality of paying and receiving commissions. Is it legally permissible?

Matt Crouch, Principal of Hodgkinson McInnes Legal and well-known tourism industry lawyer will de-mystify this area and clear up any doubts you may have about the legality of your revenue streams and pricing – and all in plain English.

His presentation will cover contract and pricing models, commissions, the impact of the Chinese tourism law on your business and related issues.

Refreshments provided.

Students gain hands-on renovation experience
Monday, 19 May 2014 to Saturday, 30 August 2014

Cracked walls, empty rooms and a strong smell of fresh paint - this isn’t your typical classroom.

Sydney TAFE students from interior design, painting and decorating, tiling and photography have been given the opportunity to transform a rundown cottage in Petersham into a contemporary and stylish rental property.

Four Design Students; Georgie Frew, Rochelle Gibbs, Nicole Vella, and Tegan Findlay (pictured) from Design Centre Enmore were chosen out of thirty-six students to oversee their creative vision for the renovation. The four are now working on this project to renovate it and also uncover its original identity.

The building was, for many years, a support centre for students of Petersham College. After the refurbishment it will be put on the open rental market.

“I’m excited to be part of this project, I enjoy the whole process from planning to styling to choosing the colour scheme,” said Rochelle Gibbs.  “We drew inspiration from Petersham’s local history and our final design reflects the suburb’s vibrant Portuguese community,” Rochelle explained.

With Sydney TAFE’s flexible course, Rochelle was able to manage a part time job and an internship while studying Interior Design.

“This project is the perfect opportunity for me to put theory into practice.  After careful research and planning, I can’t wait to see the final result” she said.

Commuting two hours from Heathcote to Design Centre Enmore, Rochelle said it’s worth it.

“Interior Design is such a competitive industry. But through this challenging project and Sydney TAFE, I have gained valuable experience and the confidence to pursue a career in Interior Design.”

“I chose Sydney TAFE’s Enmore Designer Centre because of the amazing reputation and (because) the teachers are industry experts,” said Rochelle.

Painting students were also given plenty of time preparing and finishing the exterior of the house with paint supplied by Taubmans.

"Taubmans is proud to donate paint to such a fantastic project and to support the development of students' skills in the building industry. The use of Taubmans Endure to paint both the interior and exterior of the cottage, with its Lifetime Guarantee, will ensure that the students impressive workmanship will remain intact for many years to come." said Trevor Lowder, Joint Head of Marketing at Taubmans.

Sarah Boxall graphic artist
Sarah Boxall wins 2014 Sydney TAFE medal
Monday, 16 June 2014 to Sunday, 31 August 2014

A young artist with a passion for creating comics has won the prestigious Sydney Institute Medal 2014 for her outstanding achievements in the field of graphic design and illustration.

Sarah Boxall, from Barden Ridge in Sydney’s south, has also won the St George College Achievement Award for her strong commitment and application to her studies in the Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design.

Sydney TAFE Director David Riordan said Sarah’s success is an inspiring example of the endless possibilities open to Sydney TAFE graduates.

“Sydney TAFE provides students with the real skills and support they need to fulfil their career ambitions,” Mr Riordan said.

“Whether they are just starting out, retraining or building on their existing skills Sydney TAFE gives almost 70,000 students each year a pathway to achieve their goals and provides employers with the workforce of the future.”

A passionate comic fan, Sarah had always wanted a career in graphic design. She now publishes a regular strip called Melodies of the Heart which has more than 9,500 fans worldwide.

She has exhibited and sold her work at leading comic conventions including Supanova and Animania and last year she designed and illustrated a 25 piece storyboard to help Japanese tsunami victims. She also has her own freelance design business which she started while studying at Sydney TAFE.

“Through my training at TAFE I have learned to be a designer who is able to make a client’s brief a reality,” Ms Boxall said.”I constantly use the design and technology skills I have learned at TAFE and am now selling my products locally and overseas on the internet.”

Sarah was one of 22 finalists for the Institute Medal at the Student Excellence Awards which were held at Sydney TAFE in Ultimo Friday 13 June.
